If you have known me for a while, I am sure you know that I am not a feminist. There are certain things that we have to live with and our gender is one of em…obviously unless u are a transgender.

Talking to a lot of working women (being one of em myself), I have often felt that working women tend to be in a far greater pressure, not only from ppl at work but also from the family, as compared to men. They not only have to fulfill their role at office but also have to take care of their parents, husbands, get pregnant and then also take care of their children, finally making it more difficult for them to be really  good at each and everything, being guilty about it and finally creating even more pressure on themselves.

I just found a very interesting article which talks about this very same issue that women deal with literally every day of their lives. A must read.

So I complete my two years of blogging!

It still seems a lil weird that I actually started blogging and have also continued it long enough to be writing this exactly two years later cuz I have never liked writing, I have never been good at it and still dont think I have gotten any better even after 166 posts on this blog only. Still, I know there are certain people who have been kind enough to visit my blog regularly and read all the crap that I not only write but am also audacious enough ( :P ) to publish them. So for all those people who have over time become buddies, acquaintances or prefer to remain strangers/silent readers and also those who practically always have something negative to say and yet come to the blog everyday…I have to say I wonder at you being here. Through blogging, I have been able to meet some really wonderful people and although I still do not consider my blog to be a mainstream one, I know there are people who wait for me to update it.

The blog says….Thank you :)

The First Fitnah (part 6)

Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddiq (RA)

Hazrat Omar (RA)

Hazrat Usman (RA)

The First Fitnah: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

As the body of the Caliph laid vulnerable on the ground, one of the assassins sat on his chest and attacked him further. On seeing this, Hazrat Usman’s (RA) wife threw herself on her husband’s body trying to save him from further indignity, losing two of her fingers in the process but there were further blows tohis body. The rebels wanted to mutilate his body and deny burial but they were deterred by the crying and wailing of Hazrat Usman’s (RA) wife. As she sat there embracing her husband’s body tightly, crying, the rebels looted the house and left.

It is known that the rebels did not let the Caliph to be buried at Jannat ul Baqi. Instead, he was buried in a Jewish graveyard adjacent to Jannat ul Baqi.

Note: This should been part of the previous post but I was shivering and my fingers felt numb. I had no option but to leave this for later.

Schism Revisited

August 16, 2009 Leena S. 1 comment

When I started this series, I just didnt know how difficult its gonna be. Its a huge responsibility which means I have to cross check each and everything that I write in at least 4-5 books, all from different fiqhs to make sure that it is something acceptable to all. At times I have even tried to write about 2-3 different variations that I have read about the same incident. Secondly, I am talking about people we greatly love and revere. Obviously, watever I am writing might be offensive as well but it was not only about being offensive….it was emotionaly exhausting and I discontinued writing it just 10 days after I started writing the series. In the last 6 months or so I have done only 5 posts on the topic and have left the most controversial topics for later.
I have now decided to continue with the series and if you have read it till now, you know that the narration is now reaching a point from where onwards all I would be talking about would be misunderstandings, tragedies, wars, bloodshed and the actual advent of schism.
This will be a difficult ride for me and if I disappear all of a sudden, you can assume that I just had no option but to get away from it.
There shall be a post on the topic for every 2-3 days from now for a while. The first post is already here :)

Hazrat Omar (RA) II

The First Fitnah

Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddiq (RA)

Hazrat Omar (RA) Part I

Right after the death of the first Caliph Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddiq (RA), Hazrat Omar (RA) took over the formal direction of affairs from Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA). Although he had been chosen by the first Caliph, he was a man who was respected but not hugely loved by the people in Medina. He had a tough task ahead and in the coming years, he proved himself worthy of the post by being stern, energetic and austere.

One of his first actions was to demote Hazrat Khalid ibn Al-Walid (RA) from the supreme command. Although the two were cousins, it is believed that the demotion was due to certain mishaps during the Rida Wars. Hazrat Omar (RA) appointed Hazrat Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (RA) as the new commander in chief. It is known that Hazrat Omar (RA) regretted his decision later in his life when Hazrat Khalid ibn Al-Walid (RA) was serving the Muslim Empire as a mere soldier with loyalty.

As by now the Muslim empire had expanded, it was divided into provinces and autonomous territories where the sovereign political authority was the Caliph himself. The provinces, administered by governors, were further divided into districts which were headed by junior governors who worked under the supervision of their governors. Various strict rules were to be followed by all the State officers. He was also the first to establish a a special department for the investigation of complaints against the officers of the State to maintain transparency. He also made sure to have his intelligence agents in each and every department.

Hazrat Omar (RA) was a genius, someone the West envies. There is no one quite like him in centuries of Western history. Even people like Abraham Lincoln can only come close to very few aspects of his personality and the reforms that he brought. He was someone who believed in military expansion and during his era, the Islamic Empire grew rapidly and at the time of his death, the Islamic empire extended from Libya to Indus River. And who can forget the stories of his heroic yet simple entrance in Jerusalem on a milk white camel where the white clothed Caliph received the keys to Jerusalem from the black-clad Patriarch…the stories which our grandparents just loved to tell us when we were young.

He was a man of integrity and he did not falter even when his own son (Abu Shahmah) was found drunk in public. Abu Shahmah was not spared, he recieved 80 lashes for breaking the law…a punishment which killed him. He despised pompous display of wealth and had no gatekeepers, audience halls or bodyguards. And thus, it only took a single man, Abu Lulu, the persian slave, to attack the Caliph. It is believed that Abu Lulu attacked the Caliph while he was leading the Fajr prayers, stabbing him 5-6 times. Abu Lulu was captured by the people around but he committed suicide. Hazrat Omar (RA), according to some narrations, died 3 days later and 5 days later according to some other narrations. Whatever the case may be, he embraced Shahadat on 1st Muharram, 24 Hijri.

On his deathbed, he also appointed a committee of six persons, which included both Hazrat Usman (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA), to choose a Caliph amongst themselves. Also onn his deathbed, he requested Hazrat Aisha (RA) to allow him to be buried along his master, the Prophet (SAW)…a wish that Hazrat Aisha (RA) just could not let go in vain.

The First Fitnah

Hazrat Abu Bakar Siddiq (RA)

This is a post that I have been wanting to do for a real long time and this one will again be simply from my heart with references from Ar-raheeq Al Makhtoom [written by Maulana Safi ur Rehman, selected as the best book in a competition held by the Saudi Government].

Hazrat Omar ibn al-Khattab (RA) was born in a polytheist middle class family. Most of the accounts describe him as a very tall, handsome man with reddish white skin and very shining teeth. He was a literate man, which was quite uncommon in those times and it is not difficult to judge by all the information which we have that he was an aggressive man who would not back off from using his physical strength whenever he deemed it necessary.

Hazrat Omar (RA), who later became one of the closest companions of the Prophet (SAW) and also a part of his family, was initially one of the greatest enemies of Islam and the Prophet (SAW). His uncle, Amr bin Hisham (more commonly known as Abu Jahal) and Hazrat Omar (RA) were so admanat in safeguarding the religion of their forefathers that they would ridicule newly reverted Muslims, beat them and also cut all sorts of social and business ties with them.Their impact was so huge that the Prophet (SAW) made a dua for their change of heart [Tabari].

“O Allah! Whoever is closer to you between Omar Bin Khattab (RA) or Amr Bin Hisham, show him the right path and strengthen Islam through him”

Just three days later, Hazrat Omar (RA) reverted to Islam.

That was a day celebrated by Muslims.

Right after, Hazrat Omar (RA) went up to his uncle, Abu Jahal, and informed that he had reverted to the truth. According to some accounts, Hazrat Omar (RA) went to Ka’aba and prayed publically while the chiefs of Quresh including his uncle Abu Jahal watched him angrily but did not dare interfere. Whatever of the above might be true, this surely did give all the muslims a lot of courage and they gained confidence in practicing Islam openly.

Soon after, the Muslims were coerced to migrate to Medina and Hazrat Omar (RA) was part of the first group. Around that time his young daughter, Hazrat Hafsah Binte Omar (RA) became a widow only at the age of 18. He proposed to Hazrat Abu Bakar (RA) and Hazrat Usman (RA) but both refused to marry her. The matter was resolved by the Prophet (SAW) himself when he told Hazrat Omar (RA) that he himself would marry her by saying, “Hafsah (RA) would marry one better than Usman (RA).” The marriage made the ties between the Prophet (SAW) and Hazrat Omar (RA) much stronger than before.

One of his biggest achievements in his life must have been to be announced as one the Ashra-e-Mubashira by the Prophet (SAW) himself.

Honest Confessions

July 25, 2009 Leena S. 24 comments

Although I have done a post out of narcism which had so many confessions, I thought of taking up an interesting post on minerva’s blog as a tag few days back. Haris has now tagged me with something similar so I’ll just mix em both :)

Here’s the deal to do the Honest Tag:  tell your readers 10 things about you that they may or may not know, but are true. Tag ten people and be sure to let them know they’ve been tagged (a quick comment on their blog will do). Don’t forget to link back to the blogger who tagged you.

Confessions of a Believer

  • I was born in a family which is half strictly barehlvi, half strictly deobandi. I am trying to find where I stand.
  • Asking questions about my beliefs make me a ‘nonbeliever’ in eyes of a lot of people. People can call me anything they want to, name calling only makes me more determined to find answers to my questions.

Confessions of a blogger

  • I started blogging for myself but I soon realized that a lot of people do read what I write. It did make me omit some of the content that I would love to have here but that still doesnt change the way I see a lot of things. Just spamming a particular post with negative comments, making personal attacks on me or any other reader of mine only makes me think of that commenter/stalker/spammer as a retard.
  • I have made a rule to myself that I will only allow bloggers to leave comments on my posts…cept for a few people who have been coming to my blog for a real long time.
  • I dont consider myself a writer and perhaps thats the reason why I find it so difficult to do the write ups for anything at all.
  • I have met some really wonderful people through this blog and I am glad that I opted to blog.

Confessions of a friend

  • The word friendship doesnt mean much to me anymore. I have been stabbed in the back so many times that I dont know how I still end up trusting people; I still trust people quite easily.

Confessions of a woman living in the 21st century

  • I know my weaknesses and although I complain about them a lot, I know I can handle things a lot of the things myself.
  • I check my emails at least 20 times every day.
  • Google is my wedding planner.

If you are reading it, you are tagged :)
